It’s an incredibly exciting time for the life science industry. Today, more than ever, our clients have drug candidates entering late stages of development. We are celebrating the approvals of their innovative drugs and supporting them as they begin to commercialize these products in the market. The life science industry remains complex as access to capital continues to be challenging, global partnering relationships are established, and some companies adopt a virtual model. This fast-paced and ever-changing environment has provided us with an outstanding opportunity to redevelop our From the Laboratory to Leadership program, building off of 33 years of success with over 7,500 graduates from over 1,000 life science companies. This fully redesigned program continues to turn science-minded first-time managers, as well as managers seeking to expand their management skills, into capable business leaders. We accomplish this by leveraging our extensive industry-specific knowledge and experience to utilize the most progressive and engaging professional development methods available.
From the Laboratory to Leadership begins by helping participants assess who they are as leaders – their strengths, styles, and personal brand. From there, we develop skills in the areas of communication, priority management, meeting management, goal setting and planning, delegation, performance management, and leading teams in a dynamic workplace. We wrap up the program in a fashion that brings all the learning together in a fun and impactful way. To drive high levels of engagement and impact, this program integrates learning pods, utilizes technology to measure progress and support a variety of learning styles, encourages participants to use their companies as learning labs, and helps clients set goals that deliver measurable results.
The life sciences industry has grown and changed dramatically since we first developed Leveraging Your Leadership in the late 2000s. The demands and expectations of today’s life science leaders are not what they once were.
Today, in a crowded and highly competitive market where success is defined by being first to market or best in class, life science leaders must be more agile, strategic thinkers, and skilled decision-makers than ever before. They must be dynamic influencers who push the bounds of what is possible and drive company innovation with both speed and quality. And they must lead their teams with the emotional intelligence it takes to motivate people in stressful and high-pressure environments, where the need to perform at high levels is more critical than any point in our past.
With this in mind, we redesigned Leveraging Your Leadership to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s life science companies and leaders. We work with leaders to understand what it takes to be successful, including: How to choose the right decision-making process for the job at hand; How to navigate tricky matrix-based structures; How to set and communicate clear priorities, make sound decisions with limited or ambiguous information, influence key stakeholders, and collaborate effectively; How to inspire and create high-performing teams; How to challenge assumptions and think differently to create quantum leaps, not incremental gains; and How to drive meaningful, positive change.
If there is one thing we know for sure after developing leading life science companies for over 33 years, it’s that leaders are made, not born. Life science companies need strategic leaders who think well beyond their areas of functional expertise to grow and scale effectively as their businesses become more complex. Yet when they promote high-potential individuals based on their science or technical expertise, investing in the development of leaders is not a nice to have, it is an absolute must to be successful.
Leveraging Your Leadership is for life science executives, vice presidents, and directors who have a strong management foundation with a track record of success and are looking to build the leadership skills and capabilities needed to succeed in today’s ever-changing life sciences industry and reach their next level of success.

Transition Coaching
Teambuilding for Success (1 day)
The challenge for any team leader is to get a group of people to work together effectively. When those people are scientists, the challenge can be even greater because the team is composed of brilliant people who are passionate about their individual ideas. This program combines content and activities that quickly and effectively identify the strengths and challenges of your team, while also understanding how to best leverage its various personality types. Your teams will gain a greater understanding of team development, so whether you are the leader or a team member, you will have new tools and skills to help the team reach its highest potential.
Leading in a Matrix Team Environment (3 days)
Matrix teams present a special challenge for the life science industry. Communication, goals, priorities, and deadlines all need to be coordinated and balanced by the team leader. This program addresses those challenges by defining the purpose of your team’s matrix structure and identifying the top 5 challenges the structure presents. Participants will learn how to leverage the knowledge and expertise that already exists within their team and put it to use, delivering results without increasing stress. We’ll hone problem-solving skills and learn how to run meetings with purpose and measurable outcomes. Participants will develop their emotional intelligence to make decisions in a way that is productive, healthy, and beneficial to all members of the team.
Impactful Informal Leadership (2 days)
This program is an abbreviated version of From the Laboratory to Leadership, tailored specifically for team members or direct reports whose managers or team leaders have participated in From the Laboratory to Leadership. This program allows members of a team to develop a common language and set of skills for goal setting, teaming, and conflict resolution, resulting in outstanding team performance.
Communication (half to full day)
In this program we use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as the foundation to help participants identify their communication style and that of their employees, peers, and supervisors. Participants will learn to leverage personality styles to communicate more effectively, reduce conflict, and increase overall performance. This program will also address the challenges that come with communicating with employees, strategic partners, and others who are located remotely, whether it’s on another floor, in another building, or across the world.
Teaming for Intact Work Teams (Custom Program)
Successful teams begin with a common purpose and a well-defined vision. Whether your team is focused on a scientific project, process improvement, or leading the company, this program will bring out the best in your individuals, ensure the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and guarantee your vision is realized. A pre-session assessment helps us to identify strengths to leverage and areas that might be keeping the team from performing at its best. Using this information, we create custom content designed to inform, align, and educate the team members on the skills necessary to achieve successful team performance.
Successful Strategic Alliances (Custom Program)
Based on over twenty years of experience in strategic alliance management in a major pharmaceutical company, this program focuses on how to create a successful, strategic partnering relationship to leverage your talent and capital for success. Participants will learn how to identify a good strategic partner, important considerations before getting started, how to have an effective launch, how to collaborate successfully, and how to conclude your alliance.
Talent Management (1 day)
This program focuses on getting the right people in the door (recruitment, interviewing and selection) and effectively managing employee performance through clear communication, establishing goals, providing coaching and feedback, and performance reviews. Participants will learn practical skills on providing constructive and productive feedback to drive improved performance levels and engagement. They will also understand how to address setting professional development and performance goals, and will learn how to discuss career development with high potential employees.
Valuable Visibility: Networking & Business Presentations (1-2 days)
A critical piece of career development and success in one’s current role is building a strong network and establishing credibility. This program focuses on strategically cultivating and investing in a professional network of mentors and key influencers, and how to earn their support and maintain their trust. Participants will learn the importance of positioning, presentation, and message – developing a strong executive presence to build credibility and instill confidence.
